In 1987 the Indian Health Service (IHS) of the U. S. Public Health Service began development of a derivative information architecture from the VA’s then Decentralized Hospital Computing Program (DHCP) information architecture, which it called Resource and Patient Management System (RPMS), to support ambulatory care clinics on the IHS reservations. This architecture used a number of the VA’s VistA (DHCP) functional modules but included many other unique functions that were appropriate for disparate reservation care sites. This architecture has now developed into a componentized structure. Click Here to read the IHS description of the project for this new architecture which has developed a componentized Graphic User Interface and a technical framework that allows each site to configure its information architecture to suit its specific situation but can include all functional modules from the VA VistA architecture.
