This specialty was previously known as “Registered Record Administrator/Technician” (RRA/RRT) but the competencies now include a much wider set of subjects that embrace even more than the Electronic Health Record subdomain. The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) is the primary US professional association. Key informatics competencies have been identified. Current educational programs regularly include topics dealing with all of the processes in the System Life Cycle so that these specialties are fully capable of participating in enterprise information architecture planning and in the management of specific implementation projects included in the enterprise’s information strategic plan. The Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) is an association of health information processing subspecialties and has a College of Health Information Management Executives (CHIME). AHIMA has developed joint activities with the HIMSS.
