The American Dental Association (ADA) – Click Here for ADA’s standards page – began in 1992 its consideration of the EHR in forming what became, in 1999, is ANSI-accredited Standards Committee on Dental Informatics (SCDI). During this period the dental specialties in the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) had formed in the 1980s a Special Interest Group (SIG) on Dental Informatics which included EHR subjects among the range of health informatics topics addressed in its activities. Concurrently, the American Dental Education Association (then called the American Association of Dental Schools – AADS) formed a Committee on Dental Informatics which has objectives to develop documentation for the health informatics basis for an Electronic Oral Health Record (EOHR) that can be a resource in curricula for educating oral health professional disciplines about the EOHR role and uses in the Health Information Domain. This documentation will include how the oral health disciplines will work with the information systems engineering disciplines in achieving implementations that include the conceptual content and behavior needed in oral health practice.
