Digital Imaging and Communication (DICOM) standards have been developed by the joint group organized from the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA). ACR-NEMA formed the joint DICOM Committee in 1983 to find or develop interfaces between imaging equipment and other information domains. This effort was to include hardware specifications and data elements needed for image display and interpretation.. The first DICOM standard document was released in 1985 and version 2.0 in 1988. Subsequently work began on a version for networked architectures that had become prevalent by that time and in 1991 version 3.0 was released. Later, a version of this standard applicable to dental information architectures has been developed by the DICOM Group in collaboration with ADA’s SCDI. The Radiologic Society of North America (RSNA) and the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) later developed an imaging exchange demonstration Project called “Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise –IHE” that may have implications for the EHR data exchange.
