The American Dental Association established in 1983, in concert with ANSI, the American National Standards Committee MD 156 as a result of the ADA’s work in Dental materials; and it became accredited by ANSI as an Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) MD 156. Work began in 1992 within MD-156 on health informatics standards several advisory committee efforts under the Council for Dental Practice, an MD 156 Task group of a set of work groups to develop standards for the Electronic Health Record (EOHR). In 1996 The ADA Board of Trustees recommended that ADA become an "ANSI Accredited Organization" and in 1998 ADA consolidated all standards activities into the Department of Standards Administration and formed the ADA Standards Committee on Dental Informatics. At is October 1999 and April 2000 meetings, this ANSI HISB Member Standards Developer Organization began organizing its development program.
